Every week since the pandemic began, the American Booksellers Association says more than one independent bookstore has permanently closed. In April, KJZZ reported on how two locally owned bookstores had changed their business models. In this report, we see how they’re doing.
The Poisoned Pen
In early November, Patrick Milliken interviewed Arizona author Isabella Maldonado as she launched the first volume in her new series at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale.
“It’s an FBI thriller,” she said. “You might describe it as like the Silence of The Lamb meets Criminal Minds meets The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo.”

It seemed impossible that the acquisition of Simon & Schuster by Penguin Random House the day before Thanksgiving could be overshadowed by a bigger industry event, but that is what happened when book publishing’s long-running trade show and convention, most recently known as BookExpo, was canceled. As the buzz about the end of BookExpo has cooled down, industry members continue to digest the news of PRH’s pending purchase of S&S, the nation’s largest and third-largest trade book publishers, respectively.
When the acquisition was announced, the Authors Guild, the American Booksellers Association, and the Association of American Literary Agents (formerly the AAR) all issued statements that were critical of the deal. While each organization had a particular take, all shared one thing in common: they were concerned about the increasing consolidation within trade publishing.

Denver s beloved local chain founded in 1971 has been having a rough year. Several of its locations had to close temporarily because of the pandemic, making a massive dent in sales.
So this week, owners Len Vlahos and Kristen Gilligan announced the sale of the store to Bended Page LLC, a group of investors led by businessmen David Back and Kwame Spearman. Spearman, who is Black, will serve as CEO, making the Tattered Cover the country s largest Black-owned independent bookstore. They ll be guided by an advisory board that includes Oren Teicher, former CEO of the American Booksellers Association and outgoing Macmillan CEO John Sargent.
