mmaroney@sungazette.com Despite COVID-19’s role as the culprit for dropping ridership by half at River Valley Transit bus service, the city has not had to dip into a $7.2 million Federal Transit Administration relief package yet, city officials said. “Fortunately, we have not had to use any of the FTA money yet,” Mayor Derek Slaughter said this week when asked about the use and planned use of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security or CARES Act, signed by President Donald Trump on March 27. The money, officially awarded to the transit agency in June, if needed, will be used to keep the buses running during the length of the pandemic, said Adam Winder, general manager of River Valley Transit.

Copy shortlink: A pilot program that adds a transit pass to monthly parking contracts is the latest effort to entice downtown Minneapolis workers who drive alone to leave their cars at home and take the bus or train a few days a week. The University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) are testing the Flexpass program at the city-run ABC parking ramps near Target Center. The goal is to see if allowing commuters to bundle parking and transit costs will mitigate congestion and pollution as commuters shift some trips to transit. If the pilot is successful and Flexpass becomes a regular offering, it is believed Minneapolis would be the first city in the nation to offer a single pass that gives commuters the option to drive and park or take transit.
