Unexpected downtime is every fleet owner’s worst nightmare. A disabled truck stranded on the side of the road creates a chain reaction of cost and inconvenience. A driver who might be paid per mile has been temporarily prevented from earning his or her wage. A shipment the truck is carrying has been delayed. The fleet manager must arrange a roadside repair or a tow depending on the nature of the repair or the truck’s distance from the nearest service station – a significant cost on its own. Finally, a key asset is sidelined and unprofitable while those repairs are made.

Senate Republicans on Thursday unveiled their $568 billion infrastructure package – a counter proposal roughly 75% smaller than President Joe Biden s more than $2 trillion plan announced last month.  While the GOP s proposal overall is smaller, the plan sets aside significantly more funding for roads and bridges – $299 billion compared to the $115 billion in Biden s plan. While Biden s plan put less than 10% of its proposed funding into improving the nation’s highways and bridges, the GOP plan earmarks more than 52%.

Since last August, merchandise deliveries to Square One Markets in Pennsylvania have been delayed at least 10 times, usually for about 24 hours. The reason: There was no driver available to make the delivery. “Our distributor has never had that problem before,” said Lisa Dell’Alba, president and CEO of Square One Markets. “But Pennsylvania is having a terrible time finding workers construction, convenience store and truck drivers. It’s been difficult and caused a bit of disruption in our organization.”

ODOT is investing $1.92 billion in 956 projects statewide. Although the season does not have firm start and end dates, Ohio DOT spokesman Matt Bruning said it typically runs from April to October. This year’s program includes improvements to 876 bridges and 4,596 miles of pavement. Some 96 cents of every dollar invested will be dedicated to ensuring roads and bridges are in good condition. According to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association’s 2021 Bridge Report, about 5.1% of Ohio’s bridges are structurally deficient.
