These private sector organizations remain central to the Covid-19 response. Still, in 2020 and 2021, thousands of Covid-19-related lawsuits were filed against a wide range of businesses, including airlines, software companies, cruise lines, shopping centers, restaurants, manufacturers, hotels, medical providers, and schools. Without smart policy action, these suits posed a severe threat to our fragile economy.
In response, states across the country have championed bipartisan, innovative ways to give more confidence and control over how businesses and healthcare providers can protect their employees and reopen safely for their customers and communities. TALLAHASSEE â Veto season, or at least the annual rite of asking Gov. Ron DeSantis to reject bills, has arrived after the 2021 legislative session.
Groups and individuals are sending emails to the governorâs office urging DeSantis to veto or sign bills, regardless of whether the measures were overwhelmingly backed by the Legislature or eked through.

Insurance Bills Begin to Move in Texas Legislature May 5, 2021
Numerous insurance-related bills have been filed during the current Texas legislative session and many of them have begun moving in the Texas House and Senate.
Among those bills that have recently been acted on and are of interest to the insurance industry include legislation addressing commercial vehicle accident lawsuits, COVID-19 lawsuit protections for businesses, and policyholder/insurer cooperation in resolving auto insurance claims.

One of the most high-profile bills, if passed and signed by the governor, would have a big impact on the commercial auto insurance market, as it aims to limit lawsuits following commercial vehicle crashes. The insurance industry-supported House Bill 19, by Rep. Jeff Leach, among other things, would require a two-part trial in civil actions involving a commercial motor vehicle if requested in a motion by the defendant.
