Late last year, Major League Baseball announced its intention to declare several Negro Leagues as official big leagues.
Last week, a committee of the Society for American Baseball Research recommended that 7 leagues be recognized: the Negro National League I (1920-31), Negro National League II (1933-48), Negro American League (1937-48), Eastern Colored League (1923-28), American Negro League (1929), East-West League (1932) and Negro Southern League (1932).
MLB also said it would incorporate team and player statistics from the Negro Leagues into the existing records, which include data from the American and National leagues, American Association (1882-91), Union Association (1884), Players League (1890) and Federal League (1914-15).

Red Sox second baseman and former American League MVP Dustin Pedroia announced his retirement from baseball Monday. The 37-year-old was still under contract for the 2021 season but had managed to play in just nine games over the past three seasons due to a string of devastating knee injuries that required multiple surgeries. Notably, Sean McAdam of the Boston Sports Journal tweets that Pedroia will still be paid his $12M salary in the upcoming season, and his $13.3M average annual value will count against the luxury tax for the Red Sox.

The four-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion hasn’t played since 2019 due to a knee injury. He spent his entire 17-year career with the Red Sox.
Pedroia joined the Red Sox as a second-round pick in the 2004 MLB Draft. He won the 2007 Rookie of the Year award before he earned MVP honors in 2008. Pedroia hit a career-high .326 with 17 home runs, 83 RBIs and had a league-high 213 hits and 54 doubles during his MVP campaign. He hit .299 with 140 home runs in 1,512 career appearances for the Red Sox.
