PHOENIX â Arizonaâs hotels shed more than 25% of their employees in 2020 and are only expected this year to regain a sliver of what was lost as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Job losses at the stateâs hotel properties totaled 15,235 in 2020, according to a state-by-state tally released Monday by the American Hotel & Lodging Association in an effort to encourage Congress to pass targeted nationwide relief for the industry.
The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) released new data showcasing the ongoing devastating impact of COVID-19 on hotel industry employment, including projected hotel job loss through the end of 2021.
âWhile many other hard-hit industries have received targeted federal relief, the hotel industry has not. The Save Hotel Jobs Act will provide critical support to hotels and their workers during this crucial period, Chip Rogers, president and CEO of AHLA, said in a statement. âWe need Congress to pass the Save Hotel Jobs Act to help hotels retain and rehire employees until travel demand, especially business travel, begins to come back.â
The
Save Hotel Jobs Act seeks to provide targeted federal relief to the hotel industry workforce, including up to three months of full payroll support at a taxpayer cost of $20 billion.

In a new report released this week by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the U.S. hotel industry is expected to reach 1,863,026 jobs in 2021, which represents a more than 20% loss compared with the number of total hotel jobs in 2019, which were 2,341,271.
These numbers are direct hotel property jobs and do not include job losses from other industries supported by the hotel industry, according to the report, which was sourced by Oxford Economics.
