The 20th Annual Lamar Y’Barbo Memorial Blood Drive will be Saturday, April 24th in Kirbyville. Lamar Y’Barbo‚ 54‚ a nine-year Forest Technician/Firefighter with the Texas Forest Service‚ died on April 7‚ 2000‚ of burns sustained on March 13‚ 2000‚ when his 4-wheeler overturned and trapped him during a prescribed burn. Y’Barbo was Chief of the Kirbyville Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He served with the Fifth Special Forces as a ‘Green Beret’ in Vietnam and received two Purple Heart awards. Lamar’s service to our community was boundless and continues as our community comes together each year to honor him by giving blood donations. Since 2000, over 1,643 units of life saving blood has been collected, making this memorial blood drive one of LifeShare’s largest continuous memorial blood drives.

(Getty Images) Health care systems across the nation have suffered from blood shortages since the beginning of the pandemic, and although supplies have balanced out since then, some hospitals are still dealing with concerning deficits. But now that millions of Americans are getting vaccinated against COVID-19, health care professionals want the public to know it’s OK to donate your blood after getting jabbed. The American Red Cross said anyone who has received the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccines can donate their blood at any point after vaccination with no waiting period, as long as they are symptom-free and feeling well at the time of their appointment.

Blood drive in honor of injured deputy to be held in Hesperia

Victorville Daily Press A blood drive in honor of San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Whitson who was wounded in a shooting last month will take place this week. LifeStream Blood Bank is hosting the event at the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday. Sheriff’s spokesperson Jodi Miller said Wednesday that he remains in the hospital but “continued to show improvement.” As of Tuesday, the suspected shooter, Robert Sparks, has yet to be arraigned on attempted murder charges. He also remains in the hospital after being shot by deputies. According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion and about 36,000 units of red blood cells per day are required to keep up with demand. A unit is equal to about one pint.
