Amazon has canceled its Lord of the Rings game due to a dispute with Chinese company Tencent.
According to a Bloomberg report, the online RPG based on Lord of the Rings is no longer in development.
The game had been in development with Amazon Game Studios alongside the China-based Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd. since 2019. The latter was eventually purchased by Tencent this past December.

Because contract negotiations fell through between Amazon and Tencent, the game has been canceled, according to people familiar with the matter.
An Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Bloomberg that after the acquisition of Leyou, it was âunable to secure terms to proceed with this titleâ at this time.

Bloomberg reports the game, which was announced in 2019, was scrapped over a dispute between Amazon and Chinese mega-corp Tencent.

In July 2019, Amazon s game development arm, Amazon Game Studios, revealed it was co-developing a new free-to-play MMO based on JRR Tolkien s The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Amazon was working with LA-based developer Athlon Games - a subsidiary of Chinese publisher Leyou Technologies, owner of Warframe developer Digital Extremes and Splash Damage. In December, Tencent bought Leyou, which forged contract negotiations over the Lord of the Rings MMO. Bloomberg said these negotiations led to a dispute that ultimately resulted in the game s cancellation.

The Lord Of The Rings video game that was being produced by Amazon Game Studios has officially been canceled by the studio. Surprisingly, this one doesn t seem to be because Amazon decided to cut bait and give up on it like they have other projects that past couple of years, but more for the fact that they could not agree with the other party involved, Tencent Games.

Back in 2019, it was confirmed that Amazon was funding an MMO based on The Lord of the Rings though details were very scant on what the MMO would entail. Those details will not really matter now as Amazon has confirmed to Bloomberg that The Lord of the Rings MMO has been cancelled. This is following a contractual dispute with Tencent. Tencent has recently acquired Leyou Technologies Holdings Ltd, who Amazon was in partnership to develop the game.
In a statement to Bloomberg an Amazon spokesperson said, “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.”
