Rotary Club of Kingston makes dreams come true

Alva Wood, President of the Rotary Club of Kingston presents a mask to a resident of the Cheshire Village at an event to present gift baskets to residents on International Day for Persons with Disabilities 2020. One of the most ambitious projects carried out by the Rotary Club of Kingston during the 2020 administrative year was the donation of equipment valued at $21 million to the Bustamante Hospital for Children.    The equipment donated consisted of 15 new incubators; 16 monitors and 16 infusion pumps was handed over recently.  The funds to acquire the items were raised through joint efforts of the Rotary Club of Kingston and the Rotary Club of Camrose, Canada, together with donations from the Rotary International Foundation, Rotary District 5370, the Provincial Government of Alberta and the Federal Government of Canada. The Rotary Club of Kingston’s annual golf tournament raised US$20,000 towards the project.   

Jamaica on lookout for new COVID strain

Professor Peter Figueroa, one of Jamaica’s leading epidemiologists, said that if visitors from the United Kingdom (UK) to Jamaica in the last few weeks were observing strict quarantine measures, the risk of transmission of a new variant of coronavirus would be reduced locally. Reports in the UK media said that the mutation is 70 per cent more contagious than the SARS-CoV2 strain first detected by scientists in early December. Figueroa pointed out, however, that there was no evidence that the new variant was more virulent or made people any sicker. The public health professor said that if established protocols such as the wearing of masks in public, washing of hands and physical distancing are observed, the virus will be contained.

302 passengers arrive from UK amid new COVID strain concerns

Some 302 passengers, who arrived on a flight from the United Kingdom (UK) on Monday afternoon are now in state quarantine for a minimum of 48 hours, the Ministry of Health and Wellness is reporting. Jamaica has joined a growing list of countries that have issued a travel ban against the UK following growing concerns over a fast-spreading strain of the coronavirus (COVID-19). A statement issued on Monday morning by the ministry said the ban takes effect immediately and will prohibit all flights from the UK to Jamaica for an initial two-week period ending January 4. The release from the health ministry said that passengers currently in the island will be sampled and will have to await their COVID-19 test result.

Accordingly, he has recommended the testing of all persons who arrived recently from the United Kingdom, to determine whether they might have brought this faster-spreading version of the virus into Jamaica.    The government has announced that Jamaica s borders are being closed to flights from the UK for two weeks in light of the threat of the spread of the new strain.
