PM hands over Ekushey Padak-2021

DHAKA, Feb 20, 2021 (BSS) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today handed over the prestigious “Ekushey Padak-2021” among 21 eminent persons on the eve of Amar Ekushey and the International Mother Language Day.
The premier distributed the Ekushey Padak (award), the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, at a function at Osmani Memorial Auditorium here, joining virtually from her official residence Ganabhaban.
The awardees are: Motahar Hossain Talukdar (posthumous), Shamsul Haque (posthumous) and Advocate Afsar Uddin Ahmed (posthumous) for their roles in the Language Movement.
Begum Papia Sarowar in music, Raisul Islam Asad and Salma Begum Sujata in arts, Ahmed Iqbal Haidar in drama and Syed Salahuddin Zaki in film, Dr Bhaskar Bandopandhay in recitation and Pavel Rahman for photography.
Due to the pandemic, Amar Ekushey Book Fair, one of the most sought-after events got halt this year. This book fair, which is largest of its kind in this region, was paused after much deliberation by the decision of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Though there were initial talks about officially hosting the book fair online, that plan was scrapped after the decision was made

Joseph Komol Rodrigues died in a private hospital in capital Dhaka on Jan. 31. He was 68.
Rodrigues, a Catholic father of two, originally among the faithful at St. Nicholas of Tolentino Church at Nagari in Gazipur district near Dhaka, had been suffering from kidney disease for years.
Student film about Dafen Incident wins top prize

A student film on the Dafen Incident on Tuesday won the top prize at the Ministry of Education’s Aboriginal film festival.
Made by students at I-Shou University, War of the Moon (月戰) won the grand prize at the seventh Mata Awards, the ministry said.
Director Huang Hsiao-ching (黃孝擎), a university student of Bunun descent, said he decided to make the film after fellow Bunun students proposed shooting a movie on the Bunun historical experience during a short-film class.

The Victoria Memorial incident, where BJP supporters shouted Jai Shri Ram just as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rose to speak on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose s birth anniversary at an event with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kolkata, continued to churn politics in election-bound Bengal on Sunday.
A day after the heckling, which prompted Ms Banerjee to abandon her speech saying she was insulted , it emerged that BJP leaders had cornered a big share of invitation cards to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs event and given them to party activists who were present in the crowd in disproportionate numbers, say sources.
