Protesters Rally In Belgrade To Call For Action On Environment

Several thousand people protested in Belgrade on April 10th in front of the Serbian Parliament to demand a more vigorous government response to environmental damage caused by industries and pollution due to aging power plants and water systems.
The protest was organized by more than 60 environmental organizations and movements,
RFE/RL s Balkan Service reported. Ahead of the protest, the organizations signed a proclamation addressed to the authorities with 13 demands.
Among them are the preservation of rivers and the suspension of small hydroelectric power plant projects. The organizations are also demanding that the government find solutions to the problem of air pollution and measures to protect forests and green areas.
Pope Francis calls for an end of violence in Syria, Yemen and Libya in his Easter Sunday address and condemns as “scandalous” the continued armed conflicts around the world.
“May Christ our peace finally bring an end to the clash of arms in beloved and war-torn Syria, where millions of people are presently living in inhumane conditions; in Yemen, whose situation has met with a deafening and scandalous silence; and in Libya, where at last there is hope,” the pope says at St. Peter’s Basilica.

Stormy weather brought fresh tar deposits on Friday to several beaches following a major oil spill last month that polluted much of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline.
The Environmental Protection Ministry said large chunks of tar were found on the Neve Yam Beach in northern Israel. Tar was also detected on several other beaches in the north.
Local authorities were cleaning the beaches and the ministry said it would continue to track the pollution as the storm weakens.
The announcement came days after more beaches were allowed to open following intensive cleaning efforts in the wake of the spill and a ban on selling fish caught in the Mediterranean Sea was lifted.
