The Balance Between Conservation and Economic Activity in Protected Areas
The area is called “The Maya Golden Landscape,” and it’s the site of an exciting partnership between those working to maintain Belize’s healthy natural ecosystems and southern cacao farmers. New Threats on the Horizon for Chiquibul!
Over the years, we’ve reported on the transboundary threats to the Chiquibul Forest – the illicit activities that were carried out exclusively by Guatemalans. Those activities include illegal logging, cattle ranching, and poaching – and over the years, Friends for Conservation and Development have employed a number of strategies to address these incursions. Now, they are gearing up to prepare for new threats on the horizon – this time, these threats are not cross-border – these threats are internal and very local in nature. News Five joined the F.C.D. and government officials for a two-day trip to the Chiquibul to learn more about why this protected area could be facing new threats and what government can do to help. The hemp industry is back in the spotlight tonight, following a Cabinet decision on Monday to constitute an inter-ministerial taskforce to carefully go over the Misuse of Drugs Act. That committee will then make recommendations to amend the existing legislation in order to enable the proper development of the hemp industry. It will also establish a national hemp policy and other systems of monitoring the progress of the budding industry. The committee will draw from expertise in three areas, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, as well as the Ministry of Sustainable Development, represented by ministers Jose Abelardo Mai, Kareem Musa and Orlando Habet, respectively. Last Tuesday, Ministry of New Growth Industries, Kareem Musa, confirmed a partnership with Alex Lavin, Chief Executive Officer of Growth Industries, a cannabis production company in the United States.
