GDP contracts by 7 3% in 2020-21

Image by Mango Matter from Pixabay For the financial year 2020-21, GDP growth was at -7.3% as compared to 4 percent in 2019-20, stated government data. The gross domestic product (GDP) had expanded by 3 per cent in the corresponding January-March period of 2019-20, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). Meanwhile, India s economy grew by 1.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2020-21, official data showed on Monday. The fourth quarter growth was better than the 0.5 per cent expansion in the previous October-December quarter of 2020-21. The NSO had projected a GDP contraction of 7.7 per cent in 2020-21 in its first advance estimates of national accounts released in January this year.

Data released by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation showed that retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), advanced to 5.52% for March from 5.03% in February. Simultaneously, factory output, reflected in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), contracted by 3.6% for February compared to a year ago, falling to 129.4. This is a big fall considering IIP had grown 5.2% in the corresponding month of February 2020. For the 11 months of FY2021, the industrial sector has contracted 11.3%, as compared to the marginal growth of 1% registered for the corresponding period of FY2020.
