Breaking News | NHRC Lauds NASS For Bill On 111 Special Additional Seats For Women

Views: Visits 9 The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has commended the National Assembly (NASS) for proposing a law for the constitutional amendment of 111 special additional seats for women in the two chambers of the NASS. The Executive Secretary of NHRC, Mr Tony Ojukwu,  gave the commendation in a statement signed by Mrs Fatimah Agwai – Mohammed, Deputy Director, Public Affairs Unit of the commission. Ojukwu said that the move serves as a remedy to the current low representation of women in legislative Houses in Nigeria. “The Commission had on several  occasions in the past collaborated with various Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), UNDP and the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs  and others  in proposing ‘Women Participation in Elections Bill’.

Group moves against female genital mutilation in Oyo, Osun, Ekiti

A NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation, HACEY Health Initiative, has appointed community leaders in Ekiti, Oyo and Osun states as focal persons in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) exacerbation in the states. The group aimed at improving the health of women and girls and advocating against all forms of gender-based violence by partnering with private and public organisations. Executive Director of the organisation, Mrs. Rhoda Robinson, said: “In a view to achieving the aim, a two-day training programme was organised for the selected focal persons with the aim of increasing partnership in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation.” She reiterated the commitment of the organisation to end the incidence of FGM cases in the communities and promote reporting of new cases, noting that those in attendance at the training were representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, women leaders

AFP Hong Menea Oxfam, partners launch maternity protection campaign Sun, 2 May 2021 Oxfam has launched a virtual maternity protection campaign to raise awareness on challenges women face in the workplace and on female workers’ need to receive maternity benefits. To commemorate this year’s 135th anniversary of Labour Day, the organisation and partners in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam are launching the campaign under the theme “Every Mother Counts”. In a press release, Oxfam said approximately 90 per cent of women in the labour force in Cambodia cannot access any maternity protection benefits due to their informal status.
