TAIPEI, May 20 (Reuters) - Taiwan s April export orders rose for the 14th month in a row and far exceeded expectations, boosted by sustained demand for telecommuting products during strict lockdowns worldwide to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
Strong demand for smartphones made by the likes of Apple Inc also fuelled orders.
Taiwan s export orders, a bellwether of global technology demand, jumped 42.6% from a year earlier to $54.93 billion in April, data from the Ministry of Economic Affairs showed on Thursday.

Export orders surged 42.8 percent year-on-year to US$4.93 billion last month, marking the best April ever, Ministry of Economic Affairs data showed yesterday.
The increase represented 2.4 percent in monthly growth. The continued demand for tech gadgets, combined with the traditional sector roaring back, contributed to the exceptional growth, Department of Statistics Director Huang Yu-ling (黃于玲) said.
“Economists are continuing to revise growth upward as major economic countries become vaccinated and return to business as usual,” Huang said. “Major US investments in basic infrastructure are also triggering a worldwide increase in demand.”

Taipei, May 20 (CNA) Export orders received by Taiwan-based companies increased for the 14th consecutive month in April on the back of strong demand for tech gadgets with the global economy on the path to gradual recovery, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) reported Thursday.
Export orders in April totaled US$54.93 billion, up 42.6 percent from a year earlier, the highest ever for the month, according to data compiled by the ministry.
The growth in export orders in the month can be attributed to increased shipments of tech gadgets driven by the booming work-from-home economy amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the gradual recovery of the global economy, it said.
