The Taiwanese government plans to increase the amount of capacity in its upcoming offshore wind Round 3 process to 15GW from 10GW.
The increased zonal development total capacity is equivalent to 1.5GW per year from 2026 to 2035, officials said at a meeting in Taipei on Tuesday.
The Bureau of Energy (BoE) within the Ministry of Economic Affairs will release 9GW of this capacity between 2026 and 2031 in 3GW portions.
Each project is capped at 500MW which means each developer will be limited to 500MW project bids, maximum, or can split this amount into smaller projects, with 100MW the minimal size.
In period 1 the BoE will start accepting applications from the second quarter of 2022, for 3GW, to connect to the grid in 2026-2027.

Taiwan’s Bureau of Energy (BoE) and Industrial Development Bureau (IDB) have held a meeting on the draft regulation for the 3rd Round of offshore wind auctions, including a new target for 2035.
From 2026 until 2035, 1.5 GW of offshore wind capacity would be added each year, instead of previously planned 1 GW. From 2026 to 2031, Taiwan would add a total of 9 GW of offshore wind and further 6 GW from 2032 to 2035.
Auctions for offshore wind farms with commercial operation dates in 2026 / 2027 are planned to be held in 2022, with the first bidding round planned for June 2022.
For offshore wind farms that would start operating in 2028 / 2029, Taiwan would launch bidding in 2023 and for projects that would enter operation in 2030 / 2031 an auction would be held the following year.

Taipei, May 11 (CNA) Inventories of surgical face masks in Taiwan remain sufficient to meet demand at a time when the country is seeing rising concerns over an increase in domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Tuesday.
On its Facebook page, the MOEA said the current face mask inventory tops 800 million units, with daily production hitting 18.30 million units on average and a maximum daily capacity of 40 million units.
Judging from the figures, the MOEA said, Taiwan has sufficient supplies to cope with the rising number of indigenous COVID-19 cases.
The MOEA s assurance came after Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said earlier in the day that Taiwan has entered a community COVID-19 transmission stage after seven new domestic cases were reported, six of which were from unknown sources.

In the third phase of Taiwan’s offshore wind farm development plan, capacity is to be increased by 5 gigawatts (GW) from 2026 to 2035 to a total of 15GW, the Bureau of Energy (BOE) announced yesterday.
“It is up to the developers to compete for the best locations,” bureau Director Yu Chen-wei (游振偉) said as he presented draft regulations in Taipei.
“We leave it up to them to decide what technologies to deploy,” Yu added.
