Taiwan Should Keep Its Eyes on the Prize - Taiwan Business TOPICS

Taiwan Business TOPICS Last month, Central Bank of the Republic of China (CBC) Governor Yang Chin-long spoke to lawmakers regarding the U.S. possibly labeling Taiwan a currency manipulator, one of the criteria for which is a trade surplus with the U.S. of more than US$20 billion. Yang noted that the U.S. market has become increasingly reliant on Taiwan for semiconductors and ICT products during the COVID-19 pandemic, and if it insisted on reducing its trade deficit with Taiwan, “we just won’t sell [them] our products.” The comment was intended as a joke, but it also raises questions about whether such an attitude is helpful or harmful to Taiwan, especially in light of the increasingly warm relationship it has developed with the U.S.

Ministry finally accepts Hailong wind farm plan

Ministry finally accepts Hailong wind farm plan ‘LONG JOURNEY’: The firm said that it looks forward to delivering on its commitments, after many meetings on how the local supply chain could benefit from the project By Angelica Oung / Staff reporter After more than two years of negotiations with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the 300 megawatt (MW) Hailong Offshore Wind 2A (海龍離岸風電) farm off the coast of Changhua County has finally come up with a plan that meets the ministry’s local content requirements. Hailong’s developer Northland Power Inc, wind turbine manufacturer Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA and ministry departments have had numerous meetings to figure out if and how the local supply chain can provide the 27 items that must be made locally for wind farms to qualify for the government’s higher feed-in-tariff rate.

Photo courtesy Saab Seaeye The Saab Seaeye Cougar XT Compact robotic vehicle has been chosen for Taiwan’s huge offshore wind farm development. Taiwan’s Metal Industries Research and Development Centre (MIRDC) will train ROV pilots to assist in the development and maintenance of the turbines’ underwater structures. The training will be undertaken by MIRDC at the Maritime Technology Innovation Centre created by the Bureau of Energy and the Ministry of Economic Affairs for the cultivation of national offshore wind energy talents. Created for challenging environmental conditions inherent in shallow water operations the Seaeye low-profile 300m rated Cougar XT Compact is specially designed to minimize the effect of current, with a reduced frame size, buoyancy and weight – and a thinner 17mm tether cable that reduces the effect of drag.
