About 40 percent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are in a worse economic position than they were a year ago, according to a survey carried out by the polling company Taloustutkimus.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment said the results of the survey were more positive, however, than those recorded in last autumn s survey.
23 percent of SMEs surveyed said they expected business conditions to improve over the next 12 months, while 26 percent expected conditions to deteriorate further.

Taipei, Feb. 17 (CNA) A proposal for the establishment of a Ministry of Digital Development will be submitted to the Legislative Yuan during the current plenary session, a Cabinet official said Wednesday.
According to the Executive Yuan s plan, the ministry will be tasked with supervising the information and communication technology industry as well as network infrastructure construction and management of information and communication security.

A water shortage in Taiwan has worsened, necessitating further restrictions, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said yesterday.
“While we have had a little rain over the Lunar New Year break, it did not help substantively with water reserves,” Minister of Economic Affairs Wang Mei-hua (王美花) told a news conference in Taipei. “We are facing an even more serious situation.”
Twenty to 40mm of rain fell over the holiday, not enough to significantly affect the nation’s dwindling water reserves, Wang said.
It has been a historically difficult dry season in Taiwan, with no typhoons making landfall during last year’s wet season to fill reservoirs,
