SpaceX to launch two Taiwanese satellites on Jan. 21

Taipei, Jan. 13 (CNA) The American space transport company SpaceX will launch two Taiwan-made satellites into orbit on Jan. 21, Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong (吳政忠) announced on Wednesday.
In remarks to the media, Wu said SpaceX is scheduled to launch the Flying Squirrel, a satellite developed by National Central University, which will be used to research how plasma in the earth s ionsphere, or upper atmosphere, affects radio waves, which are used for communication in 5G networks.
The other satellite, the Yushan, was produced by New Taipei-based MoGaMe Mobile Entertainment, and will be used to monitor marine traffic, Wu said.
Ministry planning low-orbit satellite launch in 2025

Taiwan’s first low-orbit communications satellite would be launched by 2025, and the government has budgeted NT$4 billion (US$140.62 million) for its development, Minister of Science and Technology Wu Tsung-tsong (吳政忠) said yesterday.
The Beyond 5G communications satellite would be jointly developed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Wu told a news conference in Taipei.
The program seeks to help local companies make inroads into the emerging low-orbit satellite communications industry, led by US rocket supplier SpaceX’s Starlink program, he said.

Fifty to learn about wind turbine blades in Denmark: Tien Li

Tien Li Offshore Wind Technology Co (天力離岸風電科技) is to send 50 employees to train in Denmark to become the first Taiwanese skilled turbine blade makers, the company told a new conference yesterday.
The employees would be trained by Danish turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S for three months before returning to the firm’s Taichung turbine blade factory, which is slated to start operations in June, Tien Li said.
The first blades would be produced in July, and the company has given itself one year to reach the quality standards set by Vestas, Tien Li chairman K.D. Wu (吳坤達) said.
