Waikato farmer fined for removing cows tails

MPI national manager of animal welfare and National Animal Identification and Tracing compliance Gray Harrison said Muller deliberately ill-treated the cows by systematically docking their tails, causing unnecessary and unreasonable pain. “In NZ, docking is prohibited as the tail is a very important and sensitive part of the cow’s body. It’s used to control flies, but it is also used in social signalling and interactions.” The prosecution relates to an inspection of Muller’s farm on December 15, 2020. Animal welfare inspectors were assisted by a veterinarian. It was later established the tails of 64 of the cows had been docked in late July, early August 2020 after Muller was informed by a veterinarian one month earlier that the docking of cow tails was now fully prohibited and had been since October 1, 2018.

Government announces financial aid for flood-hit Coasters, Marlborough

The government has pledged $300,000 to help the sodden Buller district, as 1000 people in Westport are unable to return home. Kris Faafoi and Damien O Connor have flown over the flood-hit region on the West Coast today. Photo: RNZ / Samuel Rillstone A further $100,000 will be provided to the Marlborough District, which has also been hit hard by flooding. Alongside that, the event has been classified a medium-scale adverse event, unlocking another $200,000 for flood-affected farmers and growers across the West Coast and Marlborough regions. Acting Minister for Emergency Management Kris Faafoi said the money will be provided through mayoral relief funds. While it is too early to know the full cost of the damage, we expect it to be significant and this contribution will help communities to start to get back on their feet, Faafoi said.

Overseas interest big to fill 50 veterinary places, but MIQ a challenge

Photo: 123rf Last month the government announced 50 general practice vets would be allowed to enter the country with a border exception, provided they had two-to-three years experience and were earning at least $85,000 a year. Association chief executive Kevin Bryant said they had a good process in place with The Ministry of Primary Industries and Immigration to process the visas. We have our first 10 people at various stages of getting the visas approved and attached to those 10 people, we ve got three spouses and three dependents. We ve got all these people in the pipeline. But we ve got a process where every week we submit names through to MPI, and then on to immigration, so it s just as people complete the the criteria that are required to get into their immigration visa process. So we will have the whole 50 eventually going through the system, but obviously not all at once.
