BAPDA Meets with the Ministry of Human Development
Last week, the newly appointed Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children spoke about working with various organizations to ensure the elderly and persons with special needs are cared for. On Monday, the Belize Assembly for Persons with Diverse Abilities, also known as BAPDA, met with the Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Dolores Balderamos-Garcia; the Minister of State Gilroy Usher Senior and C.E.O. Tanya Santos-Neal. Several issues were discussed, including the effects of COVID-19, improving building access, legislative amendments, and fulfillment of obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that a disabilities desk would soon be established within the ministry for greater advocacy and collaboration.

Today, the wife of Prime Minister John Briceño was officially appointed the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children. Rossana Briceño, an educator by profession, is an advocate for special needs and helped develop a programme for students with diverse abilities at the Saint Peter’s Anglican School in Orange Walk. Flanked by her husband, the Minister of Human Development, and other government officials, the new Special Envoy shared her plans. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Items beneficiaries received from the Grocery Bag Program
On Wednesday, January 6, 2021 the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, announced that it has opened an application process for a redesigned Food Assistance Program. As expected under this present government, it took two releases to get the message across. The first release was posted on the Government Press Office’s Facebook page at 9:20 a.m. and it was taken down about 15 minutes later. Then at 10:50 a.m. another release was posted on the same Facebook page to announce the starting of the program. According to both releases, the COVID-19 Food Assistance Program and the Grocery Bag Program (formerly known as Pantry) have now been merged into one program entitled Food Assistance Program. The release went on to say that clients on any of the aforementioned programs SHOULD APPLY for the new Food Assistance Program designed to assist vulnerable households.
