COVID-19 in Nigeria, one year on On By Sola Ogundipe On 30 January, 2020, the World Health Organisation declared COVID-19 to be a public health emergency of international concern. The pandemic which broke out earlier in December 2020 in Wuhan China had spread across the world. Nigeria’s index case was confirmed in Lagos on the 27th of February 2020. The Italian, who returned from Milan, Italy on the 25th of February 2020, was confirmed by the Virology Laboratory of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, and was successfully managed at the Infectious Disease Hospital, IDH, in Yaba, Lagos. A massive contact tracing rapidly commenced to identify all the contacts of the index case. From that single case in Lagos state, the country has recorded over 154,400 cases and almost 1,900 deaths in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, one year after.

Vanguard News FG trains over 5,000 to monitor Social Investment programmes  On By Ibrahim HassanWuyo Over 5000 Independent Monitors in Nigeria, were trained by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, to access implementation of the various National Social Investment Programmes (NSIP). Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and Social Development,  said in Kaduna on Tuesday during the training of 198 of the Monitors ,that the essence of the training was for the monitors to keep an eye on the national investment programmes of the Federal Government. Hajiya Farouq  who was represented by her Special Assistant on Legal Matters, Maymunah Idris, said that the independent Monitors will be assigned to monitor programme beneficiaries within their locality in schools, households, and market clusters with the focus of ensuring that the primary objectives of these programmes are achieved.

88 Monitors begin training for National Social Investment Programme in Gombe

Share A total of 88 independent monitors in Gombe state have begun training by Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development for the implementation of federal Government National Social Investment Programmes. The training was flagged off on Saturday by  the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq in Gombe.  The Minister said that the training was organized to enable the 88 participants engaged be saddled with the responsibility of monitoring the implementation of the Social Investment Programme in the state to ensure that the objectives are achieved. Represented by the Chief Administration Officer of Ministry, Mr Silas Wuyah, the Minister said that the training was currently taking place across the 36 states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
