Crews respond to forest fire in Neebing

(Photo courtesy MNRF) Fire crews are responding to a forest fire just off of Highway 593 in Neebing, about 50 kilometres southwest of Thunder Bay. Three fire ranger crews were responding to the fire along with heavy equipment on Saturday, said information officer Jonathan Scott with Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES). Helicopters also helped fight the fire, dubbed Thunder Bay 65, on Friday when it was discovered by AFFES. Considered not under control and burning at 8.9 hectares, the fire is located about 1.5 kilometres north of Highway 593, about four kilometres west of the Devon Road Mesa provincial nature reserve.

Muskoka water level concerns after 2 months worth of rain in 10 days

  BALA, ONT. Watersheds in Muskoka and Magnetawan received 200 millimetres of rain over the last two weeks, more than the average rainfall for all of June and July combined. Ministry of Northern Development, Mines Natural Resources and Forestry issued a watershed conditions statement advising the public of high flows that could be dangerous for boaters, anglers and swimmers. With all the rain we ve had; lately, it s definitely, the water is a lot higher, something we would expect in April, May, after all the snowmelt and whatnot, said Robert Langenfeld, Muskoka Powersports and Recreation. While there is no flooding expected, Muskoka Lakes Mayor Phil Harding said docks and boathouses are vulnerable to wave action with water levels above normal.

Restricted fire zone expands to cover Thunder Bay

Outdoor fires will be banned in Thunder Bay as the province expands a restricted fire zone already in place further west. The Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources and Forestry issued updated boundaries for the restricted fire zone Friday, citing high to extreme forest fire hazard throughout Northwestern Ontario. The Kenora, Fort Frances, and Dryden had already been included in the restricted zone, along with parts of the Sioux Lookout and Red Lake districts. As of 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, the Thunder Bay District and portions of the Nipigon and Wawa Districts will also be included, until further notice.
