Why Ghana needs an Innovation and Startup Act By Brian Dzansi 3 HOURS AGO National legislation - startup-act is the emerging innovation strategy most countries are adapting to create an enabling environment that supports innovative start-ups and drives local economic growth. The disruptions to the global value chains by the COVID-19 pandemic is a wakeup call to all countries of the urgency to support local innovations and entrepreneurs towards recovery of local economies. Tunisia led the way as the first African country to pass a startup act that supports the development of tech-enabled ventures in April 2018 [1] . By December 2019, Senegal became the second African country to enact a startup act that spells out tax policies and financing incentives targeted at tech-enabled ventures [2] .

Share A national Technical Task Team meeting was held in Accra, Ghana on 1 March 2021 to review the first draft of the Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development Goals Roadmap (STI for SDGs Roadmap) in Ghana. Members of the technical task, consisting of key stakeholders from relevant ministries, academia and research institutes expressed their views and contributed to the 1st draft of the roadmap focusing on prioritized SDGs (1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9), providing STI solutions in Agriculture, Health, Education, Sanitation, Industry and Innovation for Job creation. The roadmap was elaborated by a team led by the Science and Technology Policy Research Institute of the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-STEPRI), with the support of UNESCO and as part of the UN Global Pilot Programme on STI for SDGs roadmaps, which was launched in 2019 focusing on five pilot countries including Ghana.

Many Independent Representatives (IR) in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital, operating as agents of the company are using what appears to be deceptive business modules to recruit customers as independent representatives. Qnet agents operating in all regions of Ghana include some West African nationals hiding in secluded areas operating without business operating permits. Some are using similar dubious business modules to lure their victims mostly from Mali, Nigeria and Burkina Faso under the guise of securing them well-paid jobs in Ghana only for their victims to be held hostage upon arrival, forced to work in Qnet network marketing.

Dr Awal Pledges To Accelerate Marine Drive Project

  Dr Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, the Minister-designate for Tourism, Arts and Culture, has promised to accelerate the development of the Marine Drive Project, which he describes as very important and a game changer for Ghana. He said when given the nod he would look at the details of the plan and engage the business community on the Project. “The Marine Drive Project is a very important project and a game changer for Ghana… What I will do is to look at the details and the different business persons. I assure the House that I will put in the maximum to energise it and ensure the project is accelerated for the benefit of Ghanaians,” he said.
