Government approves the action plan on women, peace and security submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Today 6 May, the government approved Estonia’s action plan for implementing the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security in Estonia between 2020 and 2025.
“The human rights of women and girls, including in the field of women, peace and security, are a priority in Estonia’s human rights policy. They are also included in Estonia’s first human rights diplomacy action plan that was recently approved by the government. The connections between women and peace and security are also in our focus as an elected member in the UN Security Council,” Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets said.
Today, Director-General for EU Affairs Barbara Sušnik held bilateral consultations with Marika Linntam, Director-General for European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia. They discussed bilateral relations and the priorities of the Slovenian EU Council Presidency in the second half of this year as well as current EU issues.

Yesterday 3 May, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets met with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó. The Hungarian foreign minister visited Tallinn to mark the centenary of diplomatic relations between Estonia and Hungary and present Hungary’s objectives for its Council of Europe Chairmanship. “A hundred years ago, Hungary was among the first to recognise our young state. Likewise, 30 years ago, Hungary’s support for Estonia helped us reclaim our place among free nations,” Foreign Minister Liimets said. “Today, as members of the European Union and NATO, we are both contributing to the development of the region and global security. With its order from 30 April, the Government of Estonia has eased the restrictions on cross-border movement for asymptomatic individuals who cross the national border between Estonia and Latvia at least twice a week for unavoidable work or studies. This means that starting from 3 May, the 10-day restriction on the freedom of movement does not apply to these individuals if they have taken at least one test for COVID-19 in the past seven days and the result is negative, or if they have recovered from COVID-19 in the past six months or if they have completed a vaccination programme.
UN Security Council discussed the protection of indispensable civilian objects in armed conflict

Today 27 April, Foreign Minister Eva-Maria Liimets attended a high-level video meeting of the UN Security Council, which for the first time focused on the protection indispensable civilian objects in armed conflict. The meeting was chaired by the Foreign Minister of Vietnam Bui Thanh Son.
States must ensure the comprehensive protection of the population, including the availability of the food, water and medical supply needed for survival in difficult circumstances. Civilians are often the worst affected by conflict, including the most vulnerable groups, such as women, children and young people.
