(Latvian Public Broadcasting) On 15 April, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Lithuania have issued a call for nominations for the annual Balts’ Award for 2021. The aim of the Balts’ Award is to recognize excellence and achievement related to individual contributions and accomplishments in promotion of Latvian-Lithuanian and Lithuanian-Latvian translations, teaching as well as enhancing the use of Latvian and Lithuanian languages, research on the Latvian and Lithuanian tangible and intangible cultural and historic heritage, as well as investigative journalism on Latvian and Lithuanian history, culture and tourism, said the official notice.
Both indvidual persons and institutions can be nominated for the Award. The deadline to submit nominations is 30 June 2021 and the jury’s decision on the winner will be made in August 2021.
Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Holds Online Review of Second Periodic Report of Latvia
The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights concluded this afternoon its three-day online review of the second periodic report of Latvia on measures taken to implement the provisions of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
Andris Pelšs, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Head of the delegation, said the effective implementation of economic, social and cultural rights had been at the centre of domestic processes in 2020, with the Constitutional Court delivering several judgments on social security issues, the right to family life, the right to education, and the right to an adequate standard of living. Ms BenÃtez Salas, a Spanish national, brings with her a wide range of experience as well as her management expertise gained during her 35 years in the European Commission. She is currently Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI). She joined the Commission in 1986 as Member of the Ca
