Govt study casts doubt on claims sheep and beef farms near carbon-neutral

Govt study casts doubt on claims sheep and beef farms near carbon-neutral Newshub 1/03/2021 James Fyfe © Getty A study last year found sheep and beef farms were offsetting the bulk of their on-farm emissions. A new Government report has challenged the findings of a study released last year showing New Zealand sheep and beef farms are already offsetting the bulk of their agricultural emissions.  The Ministry for the Environment (MfE) report found rather than meat farms coming close to being completely carbon neutral, as the previous research found, the true figure was much lower. Last year s peer-reviewed study was led by Dr Bradley Case at Auckland University of Technology (AUT) and commissioned by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ). It concluded the woody vegetation on sheep and beef farms across the country was offsetting on-farm agricultural emissions by between 63 and 118 percent.

MPI opposed nitrogen bottom line over economic concerns

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) opposed introducing a tough bottom line for nitrogen levels in rivers over concerns the economic impact would outweigh the environmental benefit, documents show. Emails show MPI staff wanted the economic cost of introducing a bottom line pushed more prominently in a Cabinet paper about nitrogen level options put to ministers in May 2020. Photo: RNZ / Rebekah Parsons-King MPI repeatedly clashed with the Ministry for the Environment (MfE), even though scientific experts said a Dissolved Organic Nitrogen (DIN) level of 1 mg/L was the best way to protect rivers. Emails obtained under the Official Information Act show MPI staff wanted the economic cost of introducing a bottom line pushed more prominently in a cabinet paper about nitrogen level options put to ministers in May 2020.
