Salzgitter AG, E ON and Linde start operating an industrial hydrogen production plant based on electricity from wind power

Salzgitter AG, E.ON subsidiary Avacon and Linde have taken an important and unprecedented step towards decarbonizing the steel industry. With the commissioning of the “Wind Hydrogen Salzgitter – WindH2” sector coupling project, the only one of its kind in Germany, green hydrogen will in future be produced on the site of the Salzgitter steelworks using electricity from wind energy. WindH2 is a central component of the SALCOS® – Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking technology project developed by Salzgitter AG. SALCOS describes the most efficient and timely way to reduce CO2 emissions, and in the long term even to achieve almost CO2-free steel production. Hydrogen generated from renewable sources will replace the carbon previously required for iron ore smelting. The three blast furnaces currently in operation will have to be gradually replaced by a combination of direct reduction plants and electric arc furnaces. Such a transformation of steel production could reduce CO2 emissio

WindH2 green-hydrogen project commissioned in Germany By Mary Page Bailey | March 15, 2021 Salzgitter AG, Avacon and Linde have taken an important step on the path to decarbonizing the steel industry. With the commissioning of “Wind Hydrogen Salzgitter – WindH2”, Germany’s only cross-sector project, green hydrogen will be produced in future with electricity generated by wind power on the site of the steelworks in Salzgitter. WindH2 is a cornerstone in the SALCOS – SAlzgitter Low CO 2 Steelmaking technology project developed by Salzgitter AG. SALCOS sets out the most efficient way, realizable in the short term, to reducing CO 2 emissions, and even for virtually CO

Dresden fab starts production of automotive chips

Dresden fab starts production of automotive chips March 08, 2021 // By Nick Flaherty Bosch has run the first 300mm production wafers through its €1bn Dresden fab ahead of the opening later this year The Dresden fab is partly a high profile response to the current automotive chip shortage, with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The company already operates a semiconductor fab in Reutlingen near Stuttgart. However the focus of the Dresden fab is on power devices and custom ASICs rather than the more complex automotive-qualified processors that are in short supply. Beig able to produce those devices to automotive quality in a new fab is more time consuming.
