“We are supporting our people through this process, with potential options of relocating to other manufacturing sites, where jobs are matched to skill set and experience required, and via EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) services. “Next season, our Temuka team will focus on the products it makes really well, outstanding, artisanal, award-winning cheeses.” The spokesperson said pausing the manufacturing of bulk cheese “was necessary to enable our team to make changes to our bulk cheese processes”. Just over 18 months ago the future looked bright for the Temuka plant. This followed Synlait purchasing the Talbot Forest Cheese brand, property and plant at the Temuka site from Geraldine couple Paul Fitzsimons and Angela Veale for a figure estimated between $30million and $40million.
Salmonella
Enteritidis (SE) in poultry flocks in New Zealand and to
reduce the risk to consumers.
NZFS has been carrying
out tracing and testing of poultry operations after SE was
found at an Auckland poultry farm. These efforts have
focussed on egg producers rather than meat as farms have
existing measures to protect against salmonella and cooking
chicken meat kills the bacterium.
As a result,
restrictions have been placed on three North Island egg
layer operations, preventing potentially infected eggs from
reaching consumers.
The new testing programme widens
our focus and includes 20 egg-laying facilities and five
chick rearers that collectively account for 80 per centof

in Kiwi cows, the SMC asked experts to reflect on the
programme and its impacts.

Mycoplasma bovis, a

The disease forced China, the world s largest pig producer, to cull about half its herd after an outbreak two years ago.
NZ Pork chief executive David Baines said Germany now found the disease had gone from its wild herds into commercial farms.
Germany is the EU s largest pork exporter, with product coming to New Zealand.
Baines said it would only take infected product being fed to pigs here for it to spread.
There are rules around feeding scraps but, with nearly 5000 non-commercial herds in the country, it could slip through, he said. We see that as the big risk, the disease could land through infected imported products being fed through the waste food chain to pigs.
