Youths in Niger State on Saturday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the state government to rescue 41 persons abducted from the Government Science Secondary School, Kagara, and 21 commuters abducted along Minna-Zungeru road.
Briefing journalists at the Abdulsalami Youth Centre in Minna, the youths, under the aegis of the National Youths Council of Nigeria, decried the lack of security in the state and accused the state government of not doing much to tackle the challenge.
“Today in Niger State, not less than 10 local governments are either facing kidnapping or banditry of various forms,” the youths’ statement said. “This is becoming unbearable and unacceptable.
A group of rejected asylum seekers have been sent home in an operation coordinated by the Malta Police Immigration Section.
Their return flight left Malta on Thursday morning and arrived in Ghana in the afternoon.
The government said all those on the flight were third country nationals who had arrived in Malta by boat last year. The asylum process had determined they were not eligible for international protection.
The return of irregular migrants is a result of ongoing investment in the asylum process by the Ministry for Home Affairs aimed to speed it up and increase the authorities’ efforts regarding returns, it said.
It is becoming increasingly evident that the positive changes the Ministry for Home Affairs has implemented over the past few months have left the opposition’s spokesperson on the subject with a few things to criticise and now his pet subject has become all things prison.
Indeed, it is an exciting subject for the media but, in reality, a complex one, especially for those living it day in, day out. Let’s get things straight, running a prison has never been an easy task and never will be. More so nowadays when the facility is hosting a record number of prisoners.
