Former Maldives president and current parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Thursday sustained injuries from a suspected bomb blast after which he was rushed to a hospital, officials and residents said.
The explosion went off as Nasheed, 53, was getting into his car in the capital Male, an official from his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), told
AFP by telephone. It looks like some sort of an improvised explosive device, possibly rigged up to a parked motorcycle, the official said adding that an investigation was under way.

MALE (Reuters) -The speaker of parliament in Maldives, former President Mohamed Nasheed, was being treated for shrapnel wounds and in stable condition after a blast outside his family home on Thursday, a spokesman for his governing Maldivian Democratic Party said.
Two close family members, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the situation, told Reuters Nasheed was talking and responsive before being treated under anaesthesia at the hospital.

The 53-year-old Nasheed - an outspoken critic of Islamic extremism - was about to get into his car in the congested city of Male when a bomb rigged to a motorcycle was detonated.
According to local media reports, the British man was injured along with two military officers and a local man.
