Why does Mansour Abbas make Arab and Jewish politicians uneasy?

Why does Mansour Abbas make Arab and Jewish politicians uneasy? Arab leaders have roundly criticized the Ra am chairman for negotiating with Lapid and Bennett to become part of the coalition, while right-wing politicians were unhappy with a government that includes an Arab party for the first time; but Abbas says he is choosing pragmatism over ideology Marcy Oster/The Media Line | Published: 07.10.21, 08:45 As the Knesset pulled an all-nighter debating the renewal of the Citizenship and Entry Into Israel Law that bans the automatic granting of citizenship to Palestinians who marry Israeli citizens, Abbas, head of the Islamist Ra’am party, negotiated a compromise with his coalition partners to extend the law by just six months instead of one year and to work to find humanitarian solutions for thousands of Palestinian spouses living in Israel on temporary residence permits.

Israel blocks law that keeps out Palestinian spouses

JERUSALEM, Middle East-Israel s parliament failed to renew a law on Tuesday that bars Arab citizens from extending citizenship or residency rights to spouses from the occupied West Bank and Gaza, in a tight vote that raised doubts about the viability of the country s new coalition government. The 59-59 vote came after an all-night session of the Knesset, marking a major setback for Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. The new Israeli leader, who had hoped to find a compromise between his hard-line Yamina party and the dovish factions in his disparate coalition, instead suffered a stinging defeat in a vote he reportedly described as a referendum on the new government. The vote means the law is now set to expire at midnight on Tuesday.
