Change bloc, Ra am said hopeful coalition talks can resume after fighting ends

Mansour Abbas of Ra am (left) meets with Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid, April 19, 2021 (Courtesy) Coalition talks on forming Israel’s next government remained frozen Tuesday as the Islamist Ra’am party refused to continue negotiations amid escalating Arab-Jewish violence within Israel and the escalating rocket barrages from Gaza. But sources within the political parties opposed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Hebrew media they hoped the talks would resume when the violence subsides. Ra’am announced Monday it had suspended coalition talks with the so-called “change bloc,” potentially dooming efforts by the parties to form a government that removes the longtime premier from office.

(AP Photo/Craig Ruttle, File) Former US secretary of state John Kerry on Monday denied Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif’s claim that the top US diplomat told him Israel had carried out 200 strikes on Iranian targets in Syria. “I can tell you that this story and these allegations are unequivocally false. This never happened either when I was Secretary of State or since,” Kerry tweeted. The tweet cited a 2018 article by the Reuters news agency in which then-intelligence minister Israel Katz said that Israel had carried out over 200 airstrikes against Iranian targets in Syria over the previous two years.

Based on the government’s 2020 economic relief package passed last July, once Israel’s unemployment rate falls below 10%, unemployment benefits are to be cut to 90%. The cut should come into effect in a month, on May 21. However, Finance Minister Israel Katz said on Wednesday he had instructed Meir Spiegler, Director-General of the National Insurance Institute, not to reduce unemployment benefits until June 12.
