The New York Times reported that 17 bodies had been found and the death toll was expected to rise, citing a local commander.
Defense Minister Delfin Lorenzana told Reuters the plane had been carrying 92 people, including three pilots and five other crew members, according to his initial reports.

AT least 45 people have died after a military plane crashed after missing the runway in the southern Philippines.
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft with 92 people on board crashed on Sunday morning while attempting to land on the island of Jolo.

COTABATO, Philippines: At least 45 people were killed on Sunday (Jul 4) when a Philippine military aircraft carrying troops crashed and burst into flames after missing the runway in the country s south, officials said.
Ninety-six people, most of them recent army graduates, were on board the Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft when the accident happened as it tried to land on Jolo island in Sulu province around midday.

Manila [Philippines], July 4 (ANI): At least 17 people were killed and 40 were wounded in the Philippines Air Force plane crash on Sunday. So far 40 wounded and injured were rescued and 17 bodies recovered. Rescue and recovery are ongoing, Defence Minister Delfin Lorenzana said in a statement, adding that 92 people had been on board, reported The Jerusalem Post.
Military chief Cirilito Sobejana said the plane had missed the runway trying to regain power. We are currently attending to the survivors who were immediately brought to the 11th Infantry Division station hospital in Busbus, Jolo, Sulu, said Sobejana.
