Top priority given to agriculture:Bangabandhu

NATION FAST RECOVERING FROM DEVASTATION Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today says the country is fast recovering from devastation and destruction wrought by the occupation of forces during the Liberation War and is making steady economic progress. While talking to the representatives of Oxfam, the prime minister focuses on the destruction and devastation in different sectors industrial, economic, communications, food and agriculture in particular. Talking about the national reconstruction, the prime minister says his government has attached the highest priority to the agriculture sector. Referring to the food shortage in the country, Bangabandhu says the aim of government efforts is to attain self-sufficiency in food within the shortest possible time. In this regard he mentions the import of 35,000 power pumps are intended to boost the winter crops in the country.

Bangabandhu seeks people s cooperation

BANGABANDHU S JESSORE TOUR Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman reiterates his firm determination to deal with miscreants and other anti-social elements with a firm hand and warns them once again that his government would not allow a handful of armed miscreants to play with the lives and security of the 75 million peace-loving people of the country. Addressing a mammoth public gathering at Jessore Stadium today the prime minister seeks public cooperation in curbing the anti-social activities of the miscreants so that people can live peacefully and engage themselves in rebuilding the war-shattered country. Bangabandhu cautions the nation that the Pakistani collaborators are still active in the country and conspiring to sabotage the policies of the government. He asks the people to be aware of these elements and to thwart their evil design.

SWADHIN BANGLA BETAR WORKERS ROLE LAUDED Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman today makes a fervent appeal to all to work for the establishment of a happy and exploitation-free society on the ashes left by the enemy. He says the lakhs of shaheeds of the Liberation War would never come back. But those toiling people who survived the war must be enabled to enjoy the fruits of independence. He asks all to work in this spirit. The prime minister speaks at a function at the Gono Bhaban organised by the Swadhin Bangla Betar Karmi Samity, a body of artists, announcers and others who had been connected with the Swadhin Bangla Betar, which used to operate from Mujibnagar during the months of the Liberation War. Appreciating their role in the Liberation War, Bangabandhu says in an emotion-choked voice that they came forward to strengthen the Liberation War when many had not expected that independence would be achieved soon. DEALS FINALISED FOR PURCHASING FOODGRAINS The Bangladesh government has finalised deals with a number of countries for the cash purchase of six lakh tonnes of food grains for next year, Minister for Food Phani Majumdar says today in Dhaka. The food grains will reach before March, 1973. The minister adds that the next year s food production is expected to be 9.5 million tonnes and the total food demand is 11.2 million tonnes leaving a deficit of 1.7 million tons.

Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman renews his call today to all irrespective of their ideological or political affiliations to dedicate themselves to the great task of rebuilding the country into a truly Shonar Bangla drawing inspiration from the sacrifice of the martyrs of the Liberation Struggle. The prime minister speaks on the occasion of unveiling of a memorial plaque dedicated to the memory of Shaheed intellectuals at Mirpur. He observes that the souls of the martyrs of the Liberation Struggle would not find peace until and unless the high ideals and principles for which they had laid down their lives are materialised.
