Woods and Māori caucus push back on claims of rift over Māori housing Tue, 4 May 2021, 1:51PM
Housing Minister Megan Woods is pushing back against claims that she and Labour s Māori caucus members had a spat over the level of funding for Māori housing.
As are members of that caucus, who this morning took aim at media reporting there was a rift between Woods and the Māori caucus.

At a point when a mother and son had nowhere else to go, New Plymouth s Jo Massey gave up her lounge and shed for months on end, so they had a roof over their heads. Housing Minister Megan Woods’ continued defence of a Government scheme that has put just 12 families into a home shows just how out of touch her Government is about the scale of New Zealand’s housing shortage, National’s Housing spokesperson Nicola Willis says.
“The progressive home ownership scheme was promised by the Prime Minister in 2017. Here we are in 2021 and the scheme has only delivered 12 houses.

“Housing Minister Megan Woods’ vague promises of
supply measures to ease housing pressures won’t help a
single renter struggling to get a roof over their head,”
says ACT Housing spokesperson Brooke van
Velden.
“TradeMe data out today shows the median
weekly rent for medium houses across New Zealand reached a
new record in January, while the biggest annual increase was
in one-to-two bedroom houses.
“Year-on-year rental
inquiries on the TradeMe site rose 86 per cent while rental
supply increased just 19 per cent.

Peak housing body, Community Housing Aotearoa (CHA)
welcomes the updated Public Housing Plan announced today by
Minister Woods, and the commitment by this Government to fix
New Zealand’s housing crisis.
The 8,000 additional
homes are a significant step forward in delivery and the
Government should be acknowledged for its housing
programme.
At the same time CHA urges the Government
not to stop here – 21,415 whānau on the housing waiting
list with thousands living in temporary housing and nowhere
to move to demands that we redouble our response and ensure
that all New Zealanders are afforded their basic human right
