LILLEY: Liberals internet censorship bill a troubling power grab

Author of the article: Brian Lilley Publishing date: Apr 29, 2021  •  7 hours ago  •  3 minute read  •  It’s been described as a “full-blown assault” on free expression in Canada by a former commissioner with the CRTC. Frankly, I think that’s putting it mildly. Bill C-10, the legislation put forward by the Trudeau Liberals to police the internet, puts most relevant online content under government supervision and regulation. STOP THE LIBERAL PLAN TO CENSOR THE INTERNET

STOP THE LIBERAL PLAN TO CENSOR THE INTERNET Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault is concocting an internet control bill pitched as being all about what he calls “the safety and security of the Canadian population.” One key component will be to crack down on so-called “hate speech.” We all know that’s code for censorship of any speech Liberals don’t like. We already have laws in our Criminal Code against libel, slander and promoting hatred. We cannot allow the Trudeau government to layer on additional draconian laws.  Sign my petition below against this alarming intrusion into Canadians’ free speech. I’ll not share your e-mail address or name with anyone but I’ll write a letter to Minister Guilbeault and the prime minister on your behalf demanding they stop this insidious legislation.

Impending Online Hate Speech Legislation Worries Free Speech Advocates

Impending Online Hate Speech Legislation Worries Free Speech Advocates A federal bill to combat harmful content and hate speech online is expected to be tabled soon, but free speech advocates are concerned that it may be too restrictive. Critics are also sounding the alarm on amendments to the existing Bill C-10 that seeks to regulate video content on platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. The hate speech bill soon to be tabled will create a new regulator with the power to levy fines and require transparency from social media outlets, including about their algorithms. The legislation will also set out a legal framework for prohibiting hate speech, terrorist content, content that incites violence, non-consensual sharing of intimate content, and child sexual exploitative content.
