TANGLA: Bodoland People s Front (BPF) president Hagrama Mohilary on Friday exhorted the people of the State to vote for the Congress-led Grand Alliance in the third phase of the Assam Assembly polls, promising to bring in development and unity along with fulfillment of the five guarantees given by the Congress.
Addressing a massive crowd at Bangalipara in Baksa district, Mohilary opined that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had made several promises, including Rs 1000 crore special package to the BTC and introduction of chopper service in Udalguri, never to be fulfilled. GUWAHATI: Denied ticket by his party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), two-time former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has decided against contesting the upcoming Assam elections, his wife and former MP Jayashree Goswami Mahanta said.
“He has taken a decision not to contest the polls but he will keep working for the cause of regionalism,” she said. “He is hurt that the AGP leadership sold off regional sentiment to a national political party,” she added.
The Bahrampur MLA Mahanta, 68, returned from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi last week after undergoing treatment.
He has been serving as a legislator since 1985. In his Bahrampur seat in Central Assam, which he has been representing since 1991, the AGP is not contesting. The party offered the seat to ally BJP as part of their seat-sharing understanding.

Assam government to shut its madrasas, introduces Bill in Assembly

Guwahati, Dec 29 (IANS): The Assam government introduced Bills in the Assembly on Monday to shut over 600 madrasas run by it, which was strongly opposed by the opposition Congress and AIUDF.
Assam Education and Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introducing the bill in the assembly, said: The objective to introduce the bill the Assam Repealing bill 2020 would repeal of the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation) Act 1995 and the Assam Madrassa Education (Provincialisation of services of employees and re-organisation of Madrassa Educational Institutions) Act 2018.
