National Industrial Court of Nigeria, sitting in Benin City, Edo State, yesterday, declared that the state Commissioner for Education, Jimoh Ejegbai, lacks powers to change the decision of Governing Council of the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma. In the judgment on the suit marked: NICN/BEN/26/2020 in Asigene Peter against AAU, Commissioner for Education as defendants, Justice A. A. Adewemimo, voided Asigene’s dismissal from the service of the university due to the commissioner’s interference in the university’s disciplinary process. Specifically, the court held that the Commissioner for Education could not over-rule the Governing Council, being the final organ on the discipline of staff of the university.

Industrial Court reinstates sacked NASU chairman at AAU

Share Justice Aduola Adewemimo of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, sitting in Benin City, Edo State has ordered the reinstatement of Mr Peter Asigene, the Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Education and Associated Institutions (NASU) of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma AAU), Edo State. In suit No: NICN/BEN/26/2020 Asigene Peter against AAU and others which included the Edo State Commissioner for Education as defendants, Justice Adewemimo yesterday voided the dismissal of Asigene from the services of the university as a result of the intervention and interference of the commissioner in the disciplinary process of the institution. The court held that the former Edo State Commissioner for Education lacked the powers to alter and or change the decision of the Governing Council of the AAU.

30-year-old woman arraigned for cyberbullying

Share A 30-year old woman, Uyi Marybrown Obaseki, was on Thursday arraigned before an Oredo Magistrate Court 6 on a four-count charge bothering on cyberbullying, criminal intimidation and harassment. In the suit number MOR/148C/2021, pending before Chief Magistrate E. B. Osifo-Ehigiegbea ‘Mrs’, Obaseki was accused of, between February and March 2021, publishing “an unauthorized conversation between Barrister Felix Isere, ‘m’ on the internet with the intention to use it to embarrass him, damage his character, injure, criminally intimidate Barrister Felix Isere ‘m’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 24 (A &B) of the Cyber Crime Act 2015 as applicable in Edo State.”
