During President Joe Biden’s first address to a joint session of Congress, Vice President Kamala Harris and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi returned declaring fashion diplomacy by wearing professional, and impactful suits completed with a set of pearls. Harris stepped out wearing a full neutral, well-fitted pantsuit, while Pelosi showed up in a botanical suit finished with a three-and-a-half-inch long twisted pin made of gold and brass to her left.

Over the weekend tennis legend Serena Williams and three-time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka both headed into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open. While both their matches were riveting to watch, what was even more exciting for me was to see two proud Black women (Osaka is of biracial Haitian and Japanese heritage) showcasing the peak of women s tennis.
As someone who grew up watching homogeneously white people playing tennis at the grand slam level, seeing these women hitting it out made me feel proud to be a fan of the sport. Not least, because my own children who are biracial like Osaka, are starting to become more interested in tennis - both playing it as a sport and watching it as spectators. There s nothing like having role models who also look like you, to encourage you to push yourself further in your field of interest.
At 5:30 am EST on February 5, Madam Vice President Harris delivered the tie breaking vote to Senate regarding the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, moving government one step closer to passing the proposal without any Republican votes. They will be able to use a process called “reconciliation,” allowing bills concerning budget to avoid a filibuster and without it on the Democrats’ side, passing the budget would require at least 60 votes, 10 of which would have to come from Republicans.
President Biden has been adamant that the nearly $2 trillion is needed to help Americans recover from the economic devastation brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
