Downed power line leads to multiple fires on Ionia street
IONIA A downed power line led to multiple fires on Prospect Street in Ionia on Friday afternoon.
Officers from the Ionia Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the 600 block of Prospect Street in Ionia at 1:39 p.m. Friday, May 28, said Deputy Director John Odette.
Ionia DPS was called to a downed power line on the sidewalk “arcing and sparking,” Odette said. Officers responded to the scene and noticed the power line down, as well as smoke coming from 618 Prospect St.
DPS officers noticed flames coming from where the power lines go into the house, Odette said. It was toned out as a residential structure fire.
Ionia motorcyclist dies from injuries after striking deer, guardrail

BOSTON TWP. An Ionia man died from his injuries Thursday, May 27, after his motorcycle struck a deer and guardrail the evening prior, according to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office.
James Purkey, 32, of Ionia, was pronounced dead Thursday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
Preliminary investigation showed Purkey struck a deer on his motorcycle, lost control and struck a guardrail, according to the sheriff’s office. Purkey was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition and died Thursday morning.
Life EMS Ambulance, Saranac Fire Rescue, the Ionia Department of Public Safety, Michigan State Police and AeroMed assisted at the scene.

IONIA, Mich. â A motorcyclist is in critical condition after a Wednesday night crash in Ionia County.
Deputies from the Ionia County Sheriffâs Office were dispatched shortly after 8 p.m. to W. Blue Water Highway near Hawley Highway, according to a news release Thursday.
When they arrived, they found that a 32-year-old Ionia man had hit a deer on his motorcycle before losing control and hitting a guardrail.
He wasnât wearing a helmet when the crash happened, according to deputies.

The Ionia County Sheriff s Office responded at 8:07 p.m. to the scene on West Blue Water Highway near Hawley Highway.
The deputies preliminary investigation determined the man struck a deer on his motorcycle, lost control, and struck a guardrail. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
Life Ambulance, Saranac Fire Rescue, the Ionia Department of Public Services, the Michigan State Police, and Aeromed assisted at the scene.

Ionia County Sheriff s Office names jail administrator
IONIA A longtime corrections officer at the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was named the jail administrator.
Capt. Andy Dinehart began his position Monday, May 17, replacing Jon Hess, who retired as jail administrator at the end of last year. Dinehart has been with the sheriff’s office since 2003.
“I’m just trying to get settled in just observing and seeing what changes may need to be made,” said Dinehart.
The jail administrator runs the operations of the correctional facility, said Ionia County Sheriff Charlie Noll. Dinehart will oversee the inmates, staff, policy and procedures, maintenance and kitchen.
