UA Chancellor Joe Steinmetz sent out a tweet today with this statement.
A statement supporting the community and reinforcing values
April 7, 2021
As an educational institution, the University of Arkansas continually strives to make the world a better place through inquiry, discovery, learning. It should be evident that we stand firm against, and prohibit, all forms of discrimination and harassment, and as such, have concerns about recent legislation that has impacts on the LGBTQ community. These policies affect our campus community and can be hurtful to many. We believe that the world is better when we work together, care for one another, and intentionally seek to lift one another, so that all feel a sense of belonging.

The Arkansas Traveler published my column addressing the Universityâs need to remove the late Senator James William Fulbrightâs name and image from campus. Although Sen. Fulbright championed student exchange programs, he was an avid segregationist â a visionary for segregated classrooms, dormitories and dining halls.Â
This summer, many Black UA students called for the removal of Fulbrightâs statue from Old Main and his name from the College of Arts and Sciences. In July, the UA administration organized a committee of students and faculty to recommend whether the university should retain or remove the Fulbright name and statue.Â

AKRON, Ohio -- If approved by the University of Akron’s Board of Trustees to be the dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences beginning July 1, Mitchell McKinney will make a base salary of $215,000, the school reported Thursday.
McKinney, 54, was announced earlier this week as the university’s pick to head UA’s largest and oldest college after a national search for the next dean. McKinney, who currently works at the University of Missouri, will replace Joe Urgo, who has been acting dean of the college and interim senior vice provost.
