Leroy Pond Drive to be Renamed for Famed Basketball Coach Nolan Richardson

Leroy Pond Drive will be renamed Nolan Richardson Drive on April 16 after the Fayetteville City Council voted unanimously to honor the only UA basketball coach to have led the Razorbacks to a national championship. On March 16, city council members voted 8-0 to rename the street, which runs along the south side of Bud Walton Arena, and was chosen because of its proximity to the arena. Bud Walton houses Nolan Richardson Court, which was dedicated in October 2019 after the UA Board of Trustees voted to honor the former head basketball coach. Richardson was named the winningest basketball coach in Arkansas history after leading his teams to 369 victories during his 17 seasons spent coaching.

Days late and dollars short, the UA chancellor weighs in on LGBTQ discrimination

Days late and dollars short, the UA chancellor weighs in on LGBTQ discrimination April 8, 202112:52 pm Statement on Legislation Impacting LGBTQ Community | The Office of the Chancellor | University of Arkansas https://t.co/Nbek8oWejf UA Chancellor Joe Steinmetz sent out a tweet today with this statement. A statement supporting the community and reinforcing values April 7, 2021 As an educational institution, the University of Arkansas continually strives to make the world a better place through inquiry, discovery, learning. It should be evident that we stand firm against, and prohibit, all forms of discrimination and harassment, and as such, have concerns about recent legislation that has impacts on the LGBTQ community. These policies affect our campus community and can be hurtful to many. We believe that the world is better when we work together, care for one another, and intentionally seek to lift one another, so that all feel a sense of belonging.

University of Arkansas Maintains Wrongful Fulbright Presence

On June 30, 2020, The Arkansas Traveler published my column addressing the University’s need to remove the late Senator James William Fulbright’s name and image from campus. Although Sen. Fulbright championed student exchange programs, he was an avid segregationist — a visionary for segregated classrooms, dormitories and dining halls.  This summer, many Black UA students called for the removal of Fulbright’s statue from Old Main and his name from the College of Arts and Sciences. In July, the UA administration organized a committee of students and faculty to recommend whether the university should retain or remove the Fulbright name and statue.
