(Alliance News) - A tense post-Brexit standoff between France and Britain eased Thursday, as London recalled two navy vessels sent to Jersey and protesting French fishermen returned home without blockading the island s main port.
The latest blow to cross-Channel relations was caused by angry French fishermen protesting over new fish licensing arrangements on the Channel island following Britain s departure from the EU.
At dawn, a flotilla of around 50 trawlers had massed in front of the Saint Helier harbour on Jersey, a picturesque self-governing territory that is dependent on Britain for its defence.Â
A ROYAL Navy warship was seen on patrol off the coast of the city over the bank holiday weekend. HMS Severn patrolled about a kilometre offshore and walkers in Brighton and Hove took pictures of the vessel. Photographer Sam Carragher snapped the ship as it went past landmarks such as Brighton Pier, Shoreham Port, the Rampion Windfarm, and Brighton Marina. The naval vessel is sometimes seen off the coast of the city and has previously been tasked with patrolling the English Channel as migrant boats make the perilous voyage from France. Previously, The Argus reported how HMS Severn has also patrolled UK waters and shadowed Russian warships.
