Tuesday briefing: Charge against Trump goes to Senate

Last modified on Tue 26 Jan 2021 01.41 EST Top story: ‘Has to happen’, says Joe Biden Good morning and welcome to the Briefing – I’m Warren Murray and I’ll be your guide. The US Senate has received the article of impeachment against Donald Trump, setting the stage for its first ever trial of a president who is no longer in office. For the second time in just over a year, nine House impeachment managers carried the charge in a ceremonial procession across the US Capitol, recently invaded with fatal consequences by a violent mob urged on by Trump. Senate leaders agreed last week to delay the trial for two weeks, allowing time to deal with coronavirus, install Joe Biden’s cabinet and let Trump prepare a defence.

Covid, schools and children - what are the risks? And everything you need to know

Covid, schools and children - what are the risks? Everything you need to know THE number of children of key workers in schools in England during the third Covid lockdown has dropped in the past week, new Government data shows, but what are the risks around children, schools and the virus? Approximately 813,000 children of critical workers went to school on January 21, down from 820,000 on January 13. This represents 71 per cent of all pupils in attendance at school last week. But the overall proportion of pupils in class (14 per cent) remains the same as the week before, according to figures from the Department for Education.

Toddlers with high touchscreen device use more easily distracted

Share According to Ofcom, 63 per cent of infants aged three to four years used a tablet at home in 2019 – up from 28 per cent in 2013. It s believed this figure will likely have risen due to more devices around the home, due to the need to stay connected during lockdown.  The use of smartphones and tablets by babies and toddlers has accelerated rapidly in recent years, said study author Professor Tim Smith from the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development, Birkbeck, University of London. The first few years of life are critical for children to learn how to control their attention and ignore distraction, early skills that are known to be important for later academic achievement.

Coronavirus left school girl with life-threatening symptoms and long-term effects

Exclusive Anna Hendy, 8, is still suffering Covid flare-ups nine months after having the virus according to her mother A MOTHER says her eight-year-old daughter is still suffering Covid “flare-ups” nine months after suffering what is thought to have been a rare but life-threatening complication that left her falling asleep at her school desk. Helen Goss says her daughter Anna became unwell after both her and her partner Jonathan Halder developed the most common symptoms of the virus, including a cough and fever, towards the end of March last year. The 37-year-old said initially the virus had not appeared to affect her daughter severely but three weeks later she “became really sick, very very quickly,” with a fever that reached 40C, a rash, muscle weakness, fast heart rate  and changes to her sense of smell and taste.
