Covid-19 may be able to infect the brain because it carries a protein capable of getting through the barrier at the top of the spinal cord, a study suggests.
University of Washington researchers found the virus spike protein, which it uses to latch onto human cells, can cross the blood-brain barrier in mice, taking the virus with it.

They believe the same process may happen in people, which could explain some of the coronavirus more unusual symptoms, such as headaches, brain fog and even seizures.
WITH the Covid-19 vaccine rollout having started for priority groups, the national charity, Dementia UK, has released guidance on supporting people with dementia before, during and after vaccination.
The below advice has been created by the charity’s dementia specialist Admiral Nurses who recognise the need to support people with the condition at this time, particularly as people diagnosed can have communication challenges and reduced comprehension. Many people living with dementia will be in these vaccine priority groups, with the condition more likely to affect older people with other long-term health conditions.
Admiral Nurses work alongside families with dementia, giving compassionate one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions which can be hard to find elsewhere. They are continually trained, developed and supported by Dementia UK.

More than one-quarter, 27 per cent, of respondents to a poll said they would not be seeing relatives this Christmas, while 41 per cent were worried about loved-ones becoming isolated during the holiday season.
YouGov conducted the survey for the British Psychological Society (BPS) before Boris Johnson declared a regional Tier 4 lockdown. Dr Vivian Hill, chairman of the BPS’s working group on coronavirus and isolation, remarked that figures would be even higher after the prime minister’s decision.
