Twinflower and Alpine blue sow thistle given hope by conservation project

TWO of the flowering gems of the Highlands at risk of extinction are making a comeback as a result of a ground-breaking conservation project. Efforts to save the diminutive twinflower and the Alpine blue sow thistle are now bearing fruit in the Cairngorms. Both species have been threatened in Scotland by a range of environmental and human factors which has led to plant populations becoming small, isolated and fragmented. In the worst-case scenarios, landscape change and habitat loss has been so dramatic that some species have dwindled to a handful of sites. However since 2018, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and the Cairngorms National Park have been working in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) to save the flowers.
