The 54-year-old had launched from the summit ridge of Whernside but immediately landed heavily 200m down-slope. The Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) was called out to the incident at around 2.45pm yesterday. As the first CRO team members scaled the hill to attend to the man, who had injured his lower right leg, an air ambulance landed on the ridge. A CRO spokesman said: Paramedics scrambled down and packaged the patient before team members, assisted by passersby, carried the patient up to the aircraft. The air ambulance flew to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and team members were stood down.
