Lawn Manor Academy language challenge for students

A TEACHER is challenging her students to express themselves in another language. Anna Hegarty – the newly-appointed head of modern foreign languages at Lawn Manor Academy – has challenged staff and students to get creative in any of the 35 languages spoken at the school. She spotted that the British Council was running an online “Express Yourself in Lockdown” event, and wanted to encourage others to get involved. The school, which is part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust, wants all languages to be celebrated. “We set up a competition for students and staff to showcase their own languages in which every way and through whichever medium they chose,” Anna said.

Calne s coaches of the future

Kingsbury Green Power 10 students Students at Calne’s Kingsbury Green Academy are training to be the leaders of the future, thanks to a programme developed by the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust. Year 9 students at Kingsbury Green Academy who want to learn leadership skills are invited to apply for a place on the school’s Power of 10 programme, in which they learn to coach primary school pupils in sports such as netball, and help organise tournaments, festivals and fixtures. Scott Ferguson, Head of Physical Education and Sports Science said that the most promising students are normally selected to join the programme, which includes hosting all the local primary schools in sports tournaments.

Lawn Manor pupils make environmental pledges for Earth Day 2021

Lawn Manor Academy, which is part of the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy Trust, Guy Henderson led the Earth Day initiative by first splitting students into groups to brainstorm various ways they could do their bit to reduce climate change. “As a school we decided to pledge to change the way we do some everyday things, so we looked at how we could do that realistically,” said Guy. “We started off by looking at the history of Earth Day, which is 51 years old this year, and then explored how much difference relatively small changes in behaviour can have when they are adopted by many people. One of the simplest things is not to charge mobile phones overnight. Most phones only need an hour or two to recharge, so if I put mine on to charge while I’m asleep I’m wasting perhaps six or seven hours of electricity, every night.
