Winchester man, 80, died in hospital after fall at home

A WINCHESTER man died in hospital following a fall at home, an inquest opening heard. Derek Stanley Ashburner fell at his home in Wyke Mark on December 6, this year, and paramedics were called. The 80-year-old was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, in Winchester, and it was discovered he had suffered rib fractures. His health deteriorated and he died on December 10. An inquest was opened into his death at Winchester Coroner’s Court by senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson. A post mortem was carried out, which discovered that Mr Ashburner died of respiratory failure, multi rib fractures, flail segment, mechanical fall and atrial fibrillation, along with chronic alcoholism.

Coronavirus: Southampton hospital remains vigilant

Hospital bosses said they remain vigilant as Covid cases are on the rise. HOSPITAL bosses in Southampton remain vigilant as Covid cases across the county are on the rise. Leaders at University Hospital Southampton said they are managing the number of Covid patients treated at the city hospital. But they said they remain vigilant. It comes as the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham is at risk of becoming overwhelmed, according to Simon Bryant, director of public health at Hampshire County Council. Details of the number of Covid patients admitted to Hampshire hospitals this month have not been released. But in a meeting held earlier this week Dr Bryant said: We know that Portsmouth hospital is the trust with the most number of cases being admitted recently and it s at risk of becoming overwhelmed.

Hospital trust makes U-turn on moving cancer care

Patients were facing a more than 40-mile round trip as Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust had been in talks to move oncology care to the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital. The department which provides treatment for patients diagnosed with cancer had moved out of the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in April - almost at the start of the pandemic - into private hospital BMI Sarum Road, in Winchester. At the time hospital chiefs said the move was designed to keep the most vulnerable patients out of its main hospitals and to enable them to continue to receive care.

Covid-19 decline in Winchester district looks to have ended

THE recent daily decline of coronavirus in the Winchester district appears to be stopping, according to the latest figures. Covid-19 has been on the rise again in most places across Hampshire for several days but had been falling in Winchester. In the seven days to last Friday, December 11, the Press Association national news agency reports there were 84 cases locally, compared to 69 in the previous seven days. The rate per 100,000 people in the seven days to last Friday December 11 in the Winchester district was 67.3 compared to 202.4 in the worst area, Portsmouth, 196.5 in Havant and 191.3 in Rushmoor. The rate in the previous seven days to December 4 for those four areas was 55.3, 141.9, 126.8 and 79.3.
