No doubt education is very important subject and basic need of every citizen of the country, but, unfortunately, since the last few years, this important subject has not been of priority among the concerned authorities. It is indeed unfortunate that rather than increasing the education budget, it has been decreased, and due to this, universities and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) have suffered the most. Certainly, it should be the first and foremost responsibility of the governments, education ministry, and the concerned authorities, like the Higher Education Commission (HEC). LAHORE: Three public sector universities have surrendered to the Punjab Higher Education Department the services of 139 teaching and non-teaching staff working on deputation.
The move follows an HED order to public sector universities to surrender college cadre by June 30 otherwise the department would not release funds for their salaries. Of them,115 were working with the Lahore College for Women University, nine with the Government College University and 15 with the University of Education. According to a senior official, colleges across Punjab needed 22,000 teachers but only 14,000 were available. Similarly, the HED faced a shortage of around 9,000 non-teaching staff.

GCU to offer salaries to MPhil, PhD students

LAHORE:Government College University (GCU) Lahore will offer salaries to postgraduate students to attract brightest minds from across the world from September, 2021.
Selected top MPhil and PhD scholars will not just get the monthly salaries but also fee waivers. MPhil students will be offered Rs 40,000 per month salary and a fee waiver, while PhD scholars will get Rs 60,000 per month plus a fee waiver. The required funds will be generated from additional seats in the undergraduate programmes.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi said “These postgraduate studentships will be highly competitive. We are replicating this model from the leading global universities which allocate a portion of their income from undergraduate programmes for strengthening postgraduate research.” He added the selected postgraduate scholars in GCU would be required to teach two courses per semester related to their research topic. “
